When you think of a one-eyed Norse god, sacrificing his vision for wisdom, it’s hard to imagine he might be teaching us something about astrology. But the tale of Odin giving up an eye to drink from Mimir’s well has a lot to tell us about Jupiter retrograde. Both involve a shift in perspective—from what we see outwardly to what we learn inwardly. And both have a little something to say about what we give up to grow.
Odin’s Sacrifice: An Eye for Insight
Let’s start with Odin. Picture him: the “All-Father” of the Norse gods, seeker of knowledge, willing to go to great lengths to understand the deeper workings of existence. One day, he journeys to Mimir’s well, a mystical source of wisdom guarded by Mimir himself. Odin wants to drink from its waters, but there’s a catch—the price is steep. Mimir demands Odin’s eye in exchange.
Without hesitation, Odin plucks out one of his own eyes, sacrificing it to gain access to the well’s knowledge. It’s a painful trade, but it opens Odin to a new way of seeing—one that relies less on the physical world and more on deeper intuitive truths.
Jupiter Retrograde: Rethinking Expansion
Now, let’s jump over to astrology. Jupiter, the largest planet, is all about expansion. It’s associated with growth, wisdom, travel, and the pursuit of truth. When Jupiter is moving direct, we’re encouraged to go out into the world, broaden our horizons, and chase after big ideas. But when Jupiter turns retrograde, the energy shifts. Suddenly, it’s not about expanding outward—it’s about going inward.
Jupiter retrograde is the astrological version of Odin’s eye sacrifice. During this period, we’re asked to hit pause on our outward quests for success and growth. It’s like your inner voice says, “Whoa, slow down. Let’s rethink some things.” The usual excitement of chasing new opportunities is replaced with a quieter call to reflect. We’re invited to take stock of our beliefs, values, and goals—and maybe even question some of them.
The Ego Sacrifice: Letting Go to Grow
Odin’s sacrifice of his eye is a metaphor for what happens during Jupiter retrograde. His eye represents the external, ego-driven vision—how we normally see the world and ourselves. But when he gives it up, he gains access to a deeper, more intuitive understanding. Similarly, Jupiter retrograde asks us to sacrifice the ego’s constant need for expansion. Instead of striving for more, we reflect on what we already have.
During this time, we might confront uncomfortable truths. Perhaps we’ve been chasing after achievements that don’t align with our core values, or we’ve been clinging to beliefs that no longer serve us. It’s not always easy, but just like Odin, we’re trading something superficial for something far more meaningful.
Mimir’s Well: The Wisdom Within
In Odin’s story, the well represents deep, hidden knowledge. In astrology, Jupiter retrograde encourages us to tap into our own well of wisdom. Instead of looking for answers in the outside world, we turn inward. This can be a time of introspection, where we connect with old ideas or revisit spiritual practices. Like Odin drinking from the well, we gain insights that aren’t immediately obvious but have the power to transform us.
The Return to Expansion
When Jupiter finally goes direct again, we come out of this period of reflection with a new perspective. Just as Odin emerges from his sacrifice with greater wisdom, we reenter the world with a clearer sense of what really matters. The sacrifice wasn’t easy, but it was necessary. And now, we’re ready to expand once more—this time, with a deeper understanding of where we want to go.
In the end, both Odin’s story and Jupiter retrograde remind us that true wisdom doesn’t come without some sort of sacrifice. Sometimes, we need to let go of old ways of seeing the world to gain the insights we need. And if that means pausing our outward quest for a while, well, even the gods had to do it.
Jupiter is retrograde from October 9, 2024 until February 4, 2025.
